Importing a Region 13 Canvas Course Template from Commons


Open Course or Start a New Course

1. Log in to your Canvas Account and click the Start a New Course button located on the right in the sidebar menu. Alternatively, if your course is already created and log in to Canvas, select the Commons button in the Global Navigation menu located on the left side of the page.

2. Once you have created your course, click the Import from Commons button located in the sidebar menu.

Locating and Importing the Template 

1. Browse to your course or do a keyword search for the course title you would like to copy. To find all Region 13 templates created by the LX team, type a combination of the following terms into the search box: R13, course, template 

2. Select the resource or course title to view the resource details. 

3. To import or download the template choose the [1]  Import/Download button. If you know that this template will be used in several of your courses you can add it to your favorites by clicking the [2] Add to Favorites button.

4.  Next, choose the course you wish to import the template into and click the Import Into Course button.


Updating Course Information after Import

  • If you are using a template, fill in any placeholder fields. i.e. [COURSE NAME]
  • Update course card and add a description for your course.
  • Review starting/ending dates and availability dates for quizzes, discussions, and assignments.
  • Update and revise course announcements
  • Clean up any duplicate assignment groups
  • Recreate student groups if applicable 

Tips

It is possible to download the template into more than one course. However, if you are creating more than one course with a similar format, customize the template first, then it may be advantageous to make copies using your own personalized template.
