Creating or Uploading Captions for Videos in Canvas Studio
Creating captions for your videos is a great way to make your course more accessible to learners. Canvas Studio can be used to create captions for videos in your library and you can also export captions produced in Studio to videos that are stored on Wistia.
Opening Studio and Selecting a Video
1. Get started by selecting the Studio icon from the Canvas global navigation menu on the right.
2. You can add or record videos to your Studio library, by clicking the Add+, Record button. If you want to create a collection of videos you can use the +Collection button. See our help article on Creating videos using Canvas Studio if you need more assistance.
3. Once you have videos in Studio that you would like to create captions for or upload captions to, click on the title of the video to open up the video options menu.
Creating Captions
- Select the (1) Captions tab from the video options menu that appears just below the video.
- Select the language that is spoken in your video from the Captions Request (2) dropdown menu.
- Click the Request button to process your captions. The length of the video may determine how long it takes to process your captions. Canvas will send an email once they are complete.
Editing Captions
- Once your captions are complete you will need to review them. Canvas has an 85% accuracy rate.
- To edit your captions, click the Captions tab,
To Edit New Captions - Click the Review and Publish button.To Edit Existing Captions - Click the (1) Manage Captions option menu for the language your video was created in, and select (2) Edit. - Press the (3) play button to follow along with your video. Place your cursor in the (4) text line and start typing to correct the captions. The video will pause once you begin typing. To resume playing the video click on the next line.
- Captions will (5) automatically save during editing.
- The (6) display time on the left side displays when the text for that line will appear onscreen. You may need to copy and paste words up or down a line to add a more natural phrasing to your captions.
Uploading Existing Captions
- If you have a captions .srt file for a video from an external service, select the (1) Captions tab.
- Select the (2) language of the video or select Show More if the language selection is not available in the shortlist.
- A file browser window will appear and you will need to navigate to the location of your .srt file and choose open.
Note: Canvas does not currently have an option to edit uploaded .srt files. You can only replace or delete the file.
